Chapter Six

He hadn’t meant to. If he’d thought about it, he wouldn’t have done it. But that smile had plunged a hand inside his chest, grabbed, and twisted. John could do nothing but kiss him, and Barnaby gave a brief startled noise and kissed him back.

His mouth was perfect, lips warm and mobile and hungry, his moustache and beard soft but with just the right rasp against John’s skin. He kissed John as if it was all that was keeping him alive, hands clutching, breath coming hard. And then it was impossible to stop, because everything that had been wrong with the last months was dissolving into a bad dream under the reality of Barnaby’s mouth, their tangling tongues, warm flesh and urgent breath and Barnaby in his arms again. John freed a hand to get it on Barnaby’s head, into his hair, holding him close.

He was still sitting on the bed and Barnaby on the chair. That wasn’t close enough, and clearly Barnaby felt the same because he clambered over without breaking the kiss until he straddled John’s lap, with one hand propped against the wall to brace them both, the other sliding under John’s coat over his back. In this moment, with Barnaby’s frantically roaming hands and yielding mouth, it felt as though it might.

Stupid. Stupid.

John pulled away with an effort, angling his head back to examine Barnaby’s face. His mouth wet and red, his eyes dizzy and yearning, sharpening as John looked. “John? Is your head all right?”

“My head is very well,” John said. “I’m not quite so sure of my brain.”

“Your—Ah.” Barnaby sat back a little, as if to make a distance between them, although he was still sitting on John’s lap. “Yes. Of course. I should say, I didn’t—I don’t expect you to forgive me. I would very much like to know if there might be any chance I could earn back your trust one day. But that’s probably a conversation to have after I’ve served my time for burglary, assuming neither of us is murdered in the meantime by any of the assorted violent maniacs roaming this house. I’m not a very good prospect, am I?”

“Not when you put it like that. And we’ve other priorities right now,” John reminded himself. “Things to discuss.”

“Such as what the devil we’re going to do? That should definitely be on the agenda.”

“Yes. We need a plan.”

Neither of them had moved. Barnaby’s eyes were locked on his. “Is
