Chapter Six
He hadnât meant to. If heâd thought about it, he wouldnât have done it. But that smile had plunged a hand inside his chest, grabbed, and twisted. John could do nothing but kiss him, and Barnaby gave a brief startled noise and kissed him back.
His mouth was perfect, lips warm and mobile and hungry, his moustache and beard soft but with just the right rasp against Johnâs skin. He kissed John as if it was all that was keeping him alive, hands clutching, breath coming hard. And then it was impossible to stop, because everything that had been wrong with the last months was dissolving into a bad dream under the reality of Barnabyâs mouth, their tangling tongues, warm flesh and urgent breath and Barnaby in his arms again. John freed a hand to get it on Barnabyâs head, into his hair, holding him close.
He was still sitting on the bed and Barnaby on the chair. That wasnât close enough, and clearly Barnaby felt the same because he clambered over without breaking the kiss until he straddled Johnâs lap, with one hand propped against the wall to brace them both, the other sliding under Johnâs coat over his back. Heâd touched like that last time, as though he wanted to span all of John at once, and John got his hand onto Barnabyâs arse and pulled him in. Barnaby moaned in his mouth, and the throbbing in Johnâs head was as nothing to the pulse in his groin.
They were kissing in hungry bites and gulps, devouring one another now with a desperation that was unexpected and almost frightening. As if they could kiss themselves back to where they had been; as if this would or could make anything better. In this moment, with Barnabyâs frantically roaming hands and yielding mouth, it felt as though it might.
Stupid. Stupid.
John pulled away with an effort, angling his head back to examine Barnabyâs face. His mouth wet and red, his eyes dizzy and yearning, sharpening as John looked. âJohn? Is your head all right?â
âMy head is very well,â John said. âIâm not quite so sure of my brain.â
âYourâAh.â Barnaby sat back a little, as if to make a distance between them, although he was still sitting on Johnâs lap. âYes. Of course. I should say, I didnâtâI donât expect you to forgive me. I would very much like to know if there might be any chance I could earn back your trust one day. But thatâs probably a conversation to have after Iâve served my time for burglary, assuming neither of us is murdered in the meantime by any of the assorted violent maniacs roaming this house. Iâm not a very good prospect, am I?â
âNot when you put it like that. And weâve other priorities right now,â John reminded himself. âThings to discuss.â
âSuch as what the devil weâre going to do? That should definitely be on the agenda.â
âYes. We need a plan.â
Neither of them had moved. Barnabyâs eyes were locked on his. âIs
